Spring Into the Latest with Dissident Project Speeches & Media

Grace Jo kicked off our spring season with a 3-day marathon of talks in front of 430 high school students across Nicholasville, Kentucky. Students were intrigued with Grace’s outlining of the history and impact of the Korean War.

An educator remarked that “her speech was very powerful and must be heartbreaking for her to revisit. I also liked how she has found happiness and success here in America. Thank you for making this possible!”

Thank you, East and West Jessamine High Schools, for hosting us.

What a lovely group of students!

Dissidents in the Media

Frances Hui commemorated International Women’s Day with a piece in the Japan Times, where she argued that the Chinese Communist Party’s latent misogyny has resulted in the “world’s highest proportion of women in its prison population — about three times the global average.”

Additionally, she spoke to the International Campaign for Tibet in protest of the CCP, which wants Tibetans and Hong Kongers to “forget who we are, to forget our culture, our identity, our language.” Powerful stuff.

Gabriela “Gaby” Blanco spoke with video journalist Maggie Anders on the Cuban government’s indoctrination of its youth through classroom propaganda. Students learn how to think “correctly”: value the collective over the individual, swear loyalty oaths to Fidel Castro, and train for war against American “imperialists.”
