Before socialism devastated his country, Jorge lived a life not unlike that of middle-class Americans. But now, he is one of 6 million Venezuelans who have fled their country following its economic, social and political collapse. Jorge is an outreach fellow at The Fund for American Studies (TFAS). Now TFAS is sending him on a campus tour across the United States to share his eyewitness perspective of how a country with so much wealth and promise completely collapsed. Living under socialist tyranny showed Jorge the dangers of letting the State grow. From a very young age, he has been speaking out about the very real damages caused by socialism and has made it his life’s mission to win the fight. He was a member of Estudiantes por la Libertad (Students For Liberty Latin America), serving as a coordinator from 2015-16 and a senior leader from 2016-17. Two of Grace’s brothers died of starvation. Grace’s father was tortured and starved to death, he passed away when North Korean agents transferred him from a detention center to a jail and his “crime” was that he left his country in search of food for his family. One of Grace’s older sisters went to China to find food for her family, but went missing and was probably sold into human trafficking. Grace was repatriated twice to North Korea by the Chinese government, and suffered imprisonment after she was repatriated. Grace’s mother and one of Grace’s sisters were repatriated four times and suffered torture after repatriation. In 2006 Pastor Philip Buck bribed North Korean agents to let Grace and her two remaining family members escape North Korea. In 2008, the UNHCR rescued Grace and her family from China, and enabled them to enter the United States of America as legal refugees. Grace is one of 370 refugees from North Korea who have settled in the U.S. Currently, Grace lives in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2013, Grace became a U.S. citizen. Alongside her family, she has protested the forced repatriation of North Korean escapees hiding out in China. At the early age of 13, Hui started her involvement in Hong Kong social movements. She was a former standing committee member of Scholarism and a campaigner for multiple pro-democracy candidates in Hong Kong. Previously a journalist, Hui’s column "I am from Hong Kong, not China" in April 2019 was a widespread piece across the globe and was featured by many international media. Born and raised in Venezuela, Daniel experienced the terrible consequences of socialism firsthand. After leaving Venezuela for the United States in 2016, he dedicated himself to explaining how socialism destroyed his homeland, advocating for its freedom, and stopping this ideology from ever being implemented in America and elsewhere. Daniel has appeared dozens of times on national TV channels such as Fox News and CNN, written for the USA Today, National Review and other news outlets, and speaks regularly at college campuses and events all over the country. His country of origin Eritrea was once a beacon of African democracy, but today it is one of the most oppressive and authoritarian countries in the world. As a result, he has been involved in underground pro-democracy activism and citizen journalism in Eritrea, where the private press is prohibited. Using his journalism and new media training from the Aileen Getty School of Citizen Journalism, he wrote news articles, journals, opinion pieces, and analyses on freedom-related issues. Despite being tortured, detained, and forcibly displaced because of his work, Angesom continues to speak out about his experiences with authoritarianism and advocate for freedom on a variety of platforms. He also has been active in awareness efforts on the human rights situation in Eritrea and in supporting fellow Eritrean refugees. Her upbringing ignites an unyielding passion to defend civil liberties and separation of powers. Tahmineh earned her law degree from The George Washington University Law School and her Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of California, Los Angeles. In addition to her legal career, Tahmineh is a multilingual author with a background in public relations and media. In 2017, he did what more than 7 million of his countrymen did and fled the country that socialism destroyed. In the United States, Daniel got a degree in Political Science and Economics from the University of South Florida and is now pursuing his Masters in Political Communication at American University. Daniel is a senior member of Politiks, a Venezuelan digital media outlet that counters the Maduro regime narrative. She played a key part in the Hong Kong protests of 2019, before being forced to flee her city amid fears she might be taken hostage as a diplomatic tool due to her American citizenship. Siu has since become a fierce advocate for human rights in Hong Kong, East Turkestan, Tibet, and other Chinese regions. She writes on U.S.-China relations as well as Hong Kong politics. Siu has testified twice before the U.S. Congress, spoken in the U.K. Parliament and at the United Nations in Geneva, as well as briefing the European Union’s Delegation at the U.N. This restriction eventually prompted Alvin to attend an international high school in Beijing and prepare for admission to American universities. During high school, Alvin learned to secretly use a VPN to access the Internet beyond the Great Firewall. This allowed him to discover facts hidden by the Chinese government and understand freedom and democracy through observing Taiwanese elections. In the fall of 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Alvin began his studies at UC Santa Barbara but had to complete his entire freshman year remotely from China. During this time, he experienced the Chinese government's increased implementation of digital authoritarianism under the guise of pandemic control. In April 2021, Alvin's WeChat account was suspended after he criticized President Xi Jinping's incompetency in a group chat with nearly 200 members. Subsequently, local police officers threatened him, stating that he and his family would face severe consequences if he continued to express dissent against the Communist Party, the Chinese government, and their leaders. Upon arriving in the United States, Alvin became actively involved in Young Americans for Freedom, aspiring to share his story with a broader American audience. During this time, he embraced the Christian faith while overcoming personal challenges. In the summer of 2025, he graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a double major in Applied Mathematics and the History of Public Policy and Law. Guided by a strong commitment to advancing America’s freedom and prosperity, he began teaching high school mathematics in Florida in 2026. He was an underground Christian, sharing Christianity and political criticism, and helping people evade Internet censorship as a high school student. He defected from Communist China after becoming a conscientious objector in 2018 at the age of 19. Having witnessed the absolute deprivation of individual rights, rule of terror, and unrestricted oppression, Alvin sees America heading in a similar direction. He loves America and does not want it to become like Communist China. As a student leader on college campuses, he has been writing articles for multiple influential media outlets, organizing demonstrations, exercising freedom of speech, and working with legislators to protect American freedom. Her family experienced the consequences of this terrible system firsthand; from having her great-grandparents’ business stolen and nationalized, to being separated from her father for over 10 years. At 23 years old she moved to the Cayman Islands by herself, where she lived for 7 years. In 2019 she came to the United States and was reunited with her father and siblings after nearly a decade apart. During her journey she accepted Christ as her savior, and alongside her husband they traveled the country as testimony speakers for the Gideons International, an organization devoted to spreading the gospel around the world. She is also actively involved in ministry and her local church community in Austin, Texas. Gabriela holds a master’s degree in Event Management from Falmouth University in the UK, has extensive experience managing large events of 30,000+ attendees and is currently a Project Management consultant for the largest sports field construction company in the US. She is also a mother of one. Her family and her faith remain her biggest passions, both directly impacted by the Cuban authoritarian regime. Gabriela continues to be a voice for freedom, God, family values and continues spreading awareness on the effects of communist and socialist practices on family and life.
